History

The Ball Court, the Mayan replacement for the Arena, is cheaper, increases happiness from access to Hit Football Event and grants experience points to melee and archery units built in its city.

The Mesoamerican "Ball Game" (no native name has ever surfaced for the sport) originated in Southern Mexico, roughly two thousand years before the Common Era. By the time of the arrival of the Spanish, the game had become popular throughout Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, drawing crowds from both the upper echelons of society and the masses.
While much of the game is still not understood, what is known is that two teams of two to four players each took to the field with the goal of keeping a small, rubber ball in the air by bouncing it off arms, hips and thighs. How the winner was decided is not known, but we do know that the losers often became the next sacrifice to the gods.
The Ball Court held a deep religious significance for the Maya. Mayan Kings would often reenact a famous game between the God of the Underworld and the Heroes from the Popol Vuh, a Mayan sacred text. The King's victory on the Ball Court was said to be an omen of the continued survival of his city.

History

The Candi, the Javanese replacement for the Monument, provides one production.

Candis were Hindu and Buddhist temples built in Indonesia mostly between the 8th and 15th century AD. The term "candi" itself derived from Candika, one of the manifestation of the goddess Durga as the goddess of death. This suggested in ancient Indonesia the "candi" has mortuary function as well as attributed with the afterlife. The association of the name "candi", candika or durga with Hindu-Buddhist temples is unknown in India and other of Indonesia's Southeast Asian neighbours such as Cambodia, Thailand, or Burma. The historians suggested that temples of ancient Java also used to store the ashes of cremated deceased kings or royalties. This is also in-line with buddhist concept of stupa as the structure to store buddhist relicts including the ashes and remnants of holy buddhist priest or the buddhist king, the patron of buddhism. The statue of god stored inside the garbhagriha (main chamber) of the temple often modelled after the deceased king and considered as deified self of the king portrayed as Vishnu or Shiva. The example is the statue of king Airlangga from Belahan temple portrayed as Vishnu riding Garuda.
Some of the more famous Candis are Borobudur, a Mahayana Buddhist monument in Central Java and the large Prambanan, dedicated to the Hindu god Trimurti, both built in the 9th century.

History

The Edict, the Indian replacement for the Monument, lowers city maintenance costs.

The Edicts of Ashoka are a collection of 33 inscriptions on the Pillars of Ashoka, as well as boulders and cave walls, made by the Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty during his reign from 269 BCE to 231 BCE. These inscriptions are dispersed throughout the areas of modern-day Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan and represent the first tangible evidence of Buddhism. The edicts describe in detail the first wide expansion of Buddhism through the sponsorship of one of the most powerful kings of Indian history. According to the edicts, the extent of Buddhist proselytism during this period reached as far as the Mediterranean, and many Buddhist monuments were created.
These inscriptions proclaim Ashoka's beliefs in the Buddhist concept of dharma and his efforts to develop the dharma throughout his kingdom. Although Buddhism and the Buddha are mentioned, the edicts focus on social and moral precepts, rather than specific religious practices or the philosophical dimension of Buddhism.
In these inscriptions, Ashoka refers to himself as "Beloved of the Gods" and "King Priya-darshi". The identification of King Priya-darshi with Ashoka was confirmed by an inscription discovered in 1837. The inscriptions found in the eastern part of India were written in the Magadhi language, using the Brahmi script. In the western part of India, the language used is closer to Sanskrit, using the Kharoshthi script, one extract of Edict 13 in the Greek language, and one bilingual edict written in Greek and Aramaic. These edicts were decodified by British archeologist and historian James Prinsep.
The inscriptions revolve around a few recurring themes: Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism, the description of his efforts to spread Buddhism, his moral and religious precepts, and his social and animal welfare program.

History

The Edubba, the Babylonian replacement for the Libary, is half the production cost and increases science output.

Archaeological evidence for the Old Babylonian school system suggests that scribal education was small-scale and usually took place in private homes. School tablets have been found in private residences in many sites across Mesopotamia. Some houses, where particularly large numbers of school tablets were unearthed, have been interpreted by archaeologists as "school houses" or homes in which scribal education almost certainly took place. The best example of this is House F in the city of Nippur. Nearly one and a half thousand fragments of tablets were found at this house. They date to the 17th century BCE (short chronology) (the early part of Samsu-iluna's reign), and the majority of them were students' school exercises. Two other possible "school houses" are located at the site of Ur. The first is a house called No. 7 Quiet Street, where a smaller number of school texts was found in situ and date to the late 18th or early 17th century BCE (short chronology) (reigns of Rim-Sin II or as late as Samsu-iluna year 11). The second is a house called No. 1 Broad Street, where a larger number of school tablets was discovered. Some texts from No. 1 Broad Street may date to as late as Samsu-iluna year 11 (1674 BCE short chronology, 1738 middle chronology). Unfortunately, it is unclear whether this house is the school texts' original place of use. Another Old Babylonian home in which scribal training took place is the house of a man named Ur-Utu, located in the ancient city of Sippar-Amnanum.

History

The Mala'e, the Polynesian replacement for the Monument, provides additional culture and allows you to hire one Artist specialist.

A mala'e is a communal or sacred place that serves religious and social purposes in Polynesian societies. In all these languages, the word also means "cleared, free of weeds, trees, etc." It generally consists of an area of cleared land roughly rectangular (the mala'e itself), bordered with stones or wooden posts (called au in Tahitian and Cook Islands Maori) perhaps with terraces (paepae) which were traditionally used for ceremonial purposes; and in some cases, a central stone ahu or a'u. In the Rapanui culture of Easter Island "ahu" has become a synonym for the whole mala'e complex).
In some modern Polynesian societies, notably that of the Maori of New Zealand, the mala'e is still a vital part of everyday life. However, in tropical Polynesia, most mala'e were destroyed or abandoned with the arrival of Christianity in the 19th century and some of them have become an attraction for tourists or archaeologists. Nevertheless, the place where the mala'e were built are still considered as tapu in most islands. In the Cook Islands, a few mala'e are still maintained, and are quickly tidied up before the investiture of a new ariki.

The Mbwadi, the Congolese replacement for the Weaver, increases the city's wealth output and allows you to hire one Merchant specialist.

The Seven Kingdoms were also called momboares in the 17th century text of the Portuguese Jesuit priest, Mateus Cardoso, which offers an extensive description of the region. The term momboares certainly derives from the Kikongo, or Congo language, word mbwadi, meaning seven. Cardoso noted that the region was famous in his day for the large amount of cloth that it produced, some of which was exported to the Portuguese colonial city of Luanda, Angola. Reports of the early 17th century suggest that the Seven Kingdoms exported as much as 100,000 meters of cloth annually to that market alone, suggesting that its total production must have been several times higher, putting in on a par with other major textile centers in the world, including areas of equivalent size in Europe and India.

History

The Obelisk, the Egyptian replacement for the Monument, provides a major bonus to Culture output in your city and allows you to hire one Priest specialist.

An obelisk is an upright four-sided pillar that tapers to a point, usually placed to commemorate some important god, person or event. The earliest known obelisks are found in Egypt, which is believed to have invented the form. Obelisks were a prominent feature of Egyptian architecture, and two were generally placed at the entrance to Egyptian temples.
Cleopatra's Needles - the most famous Egyptian obelisks (which were later looted and relocated to various countries around the world) - were constructed of granite and stood over 20 meters in height. While much larger obelisks have since been built - at 167 meters the Washington Monument in the United States is the tallest obelisk in the world - the Egyptian obelisks were extremely impressive feats of architecture and engineering for their time.

History

The Reservoir, the Harappan replacement for the Bath, requires the Masonry technology instead of the Medicine technology and doesn't require an Aqueduct.

The ancient Indus Valley Civilization of Northwest South Asia, including Pakistan and parts of India, was prominent in hydraulic engineering, and had many water supply and sanitation devices that were the first of their kind.
Among other things, they contain the world's earliest known system of flush toilets. These existed in many homes, and were connected to a common sewerage pipe. Most houses also had private wells. City walls functioned as a barrier against floods.
Mohenjo-daro is one of the best excavated and studied settlements from this civilization. The Great Bath might be the first of its kind in pre-historic period. This ancient town had more than 700 wells, and most houses in Mohenjo-daro had one private well.
Dholavira, located in Gujarat, India, had a series of water storing tanks and step wells, and its water management system has been called "unique". Dholavira had at least five baths, size of one is comparable with Great Bath, Mohenjadaro.

History

The Stele, the Ethiopian replacement for the Pagan Temple, allows you to hire two Priest specialists.

A Stele is a monument made of either wood or rock, erected for commemorative, funerary, or official purposes. In addition, Stelai would sometimes be used as territorial markers. Stelai have often provided some of the best historical records of a civilization, due to the lasting nature of the materials with which they were made.
The Kingdom of Aksum, which encompassed Ethiopia, Yemen, southern Saudi Arabia, northern Somalia, Djibouti and northern Sudan, erected some of the largest Stelai in the world. These Stelai, located in the city of Aksum in Ethiopia, mark the graves of Aksum's kings and nobles.

History

The Taixue, the Chinese replacement for the Library, provides extra culture and allows you to hire one Statesman and one more Scientist specialist.

Taixue (literally "Greatest Study or Learning"), or sometimes called the "Imperial Academy", "Imperial School", "Imperial University" or "Imperial Central University", was the highest rank of educational establishment in Ancient China between the Han Dynasty and Sui Dynasty. It was replaced by the Guozijian. The first nationwide government school system in China was established in 3 AD under Emperor Ping of Han, with the taixue located in the capital of Chang'an and local schools established in the prefectures and in the main cities of the smaller counties.
Taixue taught Confucianism and Chinese literature among other things for the high level civil service, although a civil service system based upon examination rather than recommendation was not introduced until the Sui and not perfected until the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

History

The Art Studio, the Italian replacement for the Forge, provides a big culture boost and allows you to hire one Artist specialist.

A studio is an artist's or worker's workroom, or the catchall term for an artist and his or her employees who work within that studio. This can be for the purpose of architecture, painting, pottery (ceramics), sculpture, scrapbooking, photography, graphic design, filmmaking, animation, radio or television production broadcasting or the making of music. The term is also used for the workroom of dancers, often specified to dance studio.
The studio of a successful artist, especially from the 15th to the 19th centuries, characterized all the assistants, thus the designation of paintings as "from the workshop of..." or "studio of..." An art studio is sometimes called an atelier, especially in earlier eras. In contemporary, English language use, "atelier" can also refer to the Atelier Method, a training method for artists that usually takes place in a professional artist's studio.
The above mentioned "method" calls upon that zeal for study to play a significant role in the production which occurs in a studio space. A studio is more or less artful to the degree that the artist who occupies it is committed to the continuing education in his or her formal discipline. Academic curriculi categorize studio classes in order to prepare students for the rigors of building sets of skills which require a continuity of practice in order to achieve growth and mastery of their artistic expression. A versatile and creative mind will embrace the opportunity of such practice to innovate and experiment, which develops uniquely individual qualities of each artist's expression. Thus the method raises and maintains an art studio space above the level of a mere production facility or workshop.

History

The Baray, the Khmer replacement for the Aqueduct, provides two extra food.

First built under the reign of the Khmer King Yasodharapura, Barays were massive reservoirs designed to provide sustenance and clean water for the surrounding populace. The first Baray, known as the East Baray, was constructed in the late ninth century. The above-ground levee relied on a series of huge earthen walls to catch falling rain water in the reservoirs, which were capable of holding over 60 million cubic meters of liquid.
A second Baray, the Western Baray, was built under the reign of Suryavarman I. The Western Baray was similar in design to the first, if a bit larger, to provide for the increased Khmer population. This new Baray would become an invaluable source of sustenance as the kingdom of Khmer reached new heights under the reign of Suryavarman II.

History

The Charreada Arena, the Mexican replacement for the Arena, grants experience points to mounted units built in its city and increases happiness from access to Horses.

A Charreada is a Mexican-style rodeo that is different from other rodeos. The Mexican cowboy or cowgirl is known as a charro or charra. In an American rodeo the competitors race against the clock, so the emphasis is on speed in any given event. On the other hand, in a Mexican charreada the excellent style and skills of the rider or roper are emphasized, and only one event is timed.
Charrería (a word encompassing all aspects of the art) came to Mexico from Salamanca, Spain, in the 16th century. Interesting is the fact that when the Spaniards first settled in Mexico they were under the orders of the ruler to raise horses, but not to allow the Mexicans to ride them. By 1528 the Spaniards had very large cattle-raising estates. They soon found it necessary to employ the Mexicans as vaqueros or herdsman, and the natives soon became excellent horsemen. Small landholders, known as rancheros or ranchers, were the first genuine charros and invented charreadas.

History

The Divan, the Turkic replacement for the Jail, lowers the city's maintenance costs and allows you to hire one Statesman specialist.

Divan is a Persian word in origin and loaned into Arabic. The original meaning was "bundle (of written sheets)", hence "book", especially "book of accounts," and hence "office of accounts," "custom house," "council chamber".

A divan or diwan (in Arabic) was a high governmental intelligence agencies in a number of Islamic states, or its chief official. The first diwan was created under Caliph Umar I (A.D. 634-644) between 636 and 641 A.D. It comprised the names of the warriors of Medina who participated in the Muslim conquests and their families, and was intended to facilitate the payment of salary, in coin or in rations to them, according to their service and their relationship to Muhammad. This first army register (diwan al-jund) was soon emulated in other provincial capitals like Basra, Kufa and Fustat. \t

Under the Abbasid Caliphate, the administration, partly under the increasing influence of Iranian culture, became more and more elaborate and complex. As part of this process, the diwans increased in number and sophistication, reaching their apogee in the 9th–10th centuries. At the same time, the office of vizier was also created to coordinate government. As the Abbasid Caliphate began to fragment in the 9th century, its administrative machinery was copied by the emergent successor dynasties, with the already extant local diwan branches likely providing the base on which the new administrations were formed.

Many of the Turkish dynasties that emerged utilized the divan system to administrate more effectively their territories. In the Great Seljuk Empire, to compensate the frequent absence on campaign of the Seljuk sultans, the vizier assumed an even greater prominence, concentrating the direction of civil, military and religious affairs in his own bureau. The Divan-i Hümayun or Sublime Porte was for many years the council of ministers of the Ottoman Empire. It consisted of the usually (except in the Sultan's presence) Grand Vizier, who presided, the other viziers, the kadi'askers, the nisanci, and the defterdars, and occasionally the Janissary Aga. The Assemblies of the Danubian Principalities (Ad hoc Divan) under Ottoman rule were also called "divan" ("Divanuri" in Romanian).

History

The Forum, the Roman replacement for the Market, increases a city's Great Person birth rate and allows you to hire two Statesman specialists.

Roman civic and commercial life was largely centered upon the "forum," an open space surrounded by markets, temples, government buildings, and the "rostra," a platform where Romans made political speeches to their fellows. The Roman forums may have been modeled upon the "agoras," which served much the same purposes in earlier Greek cities. The most famous forum is the "Roman Forum," located at the center of the Imperial City, but most other Roman cities had them as well.
The Roman Forum in Rome contained a number of very important and beautiful buildings, including temples devoted to Romulus, Saturn and Vesta, several basilicas, and the "Curia Hostilia," which housed the Roman Senate.

History

The Glassmaker, the Phoenician replacement for the Market, increases a city's trade route yield.

According to Pliny the Elder, Phoenician traders were the first to stumble upon glass manufacturing techniques at the site of the Belus River. Georgius Agricola, in De re metallica, reported a traditional serendipitous "discovery" tale of familiar type:
"The tradition is that a merchant ship laden with nitrum being moored at this place, the merchants were preparing their meal on the beach, and not having stones to prop up their pots, they used lumps of nitrum from the ship, which fused and mixed with the sands of the shore, and there flowed streams of a new translucent liquid, and thus was the origin of glass."
This account is more a reflection of Roman experience of glass production, however, as white silica sand from this area was used in the production of glass within the Roman Empire due to its low impurity levels.
During the 1st century BC glass blowing was discovered on the Syro-Palestinian coast, revolutionizing the industry. Glass vessels were now inexpensive compared to pottery vessels. A growth of the use of glass products occurred throughout the Roman world. Glass became the Roman plastic, and glass containers produced in Alexandria spread throughout the Roman Empire. With the discovery of clear glass (through the introduction of manganese dioxide), by glass blowers in Alexandria circa 100 AD, the Romans began to use glass for architectural purposes. Cast glass windows, albeit with poor optical qualities, began to appear in the most important buildings in Rome and the most luxurious villas of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Over the next 1,000 years glass making and working continued and spread through southern Europe and beyond.

History

The Hammam, the Turkish replacement for the Bath, increases a city's happiness.

Cleanliness was extremely important in Ottoman culture. Before modern plumbing, the Ottomans constructed communal steam baths ("hammams") throughout their major cities. In early times many of these were attached to mosques - ritual cleanliness played an important part in the Ottoman religious beliefs - in later periods they evolved into separate buildings and eventually, into enormous complexes of buildings.
The Ottoman hammams were largely modeled on their Roman and Byzantine predecessors. They contained three main areas: a hot room, a moderate room and a cool room. Both men and women could attend hammams, but they bathed in separate areas.

History

The Hippodrome, the Byzantine replacement for the Theatre, increases happiness, increases the city's happiness with access to Horses and increases the happiness output from using the culture slider.

The Hippodrome of Constantinople (literally "Horse Path" in Greek) was constructed in 203 AD by the Emperor Septimius Severus. The building was a massive venue for chariot races. While the art of charioteering saw great advances in the Hippodrome - the first four-horse races were held here - much of the venue's renown would stem from it involvement in one of the most terrible massacres in Byzantine history. During the Nika Revolts, a brutal uprising between rival racing factions, nearly 30000 rioters were slain by Byzantine troops within the Hippodrome.

History

The Noria, the Moorish replacement for the Aqueduct, is cheaper and provides a production bonus.

A noria is a machine for lifting water into a small aqueduct, either for the purpose of irrigation or, in at least one known instance, to feed seawater into a saltern.
Muslim engineers used norias to discharge water into aqueducts which carried the water to towns and fields. Some of the norias used in the medieval Islamic world were as large as 20 meters in diameter, the one in Hama being a surviving example still used in modern times. It has 120 water collection compartments and could raise as much as 95 litres of water per minute.

History

The Odeon, the Greek replacement for the Theatre, increase a city's happiness and allows you to hire one Statesman specialist.

Modern western drama was created in Greece around 530 BC, evolving from the "dithyramb," a fertility ritual of songs, poems and dances offered to the Greek god Dionysus. An "Odeon" is a large, open-aired structure in which such performances were held. The audience sat in a semicircle of seats around a central paved "dancing square" (orchestra). The first row of seats was reserved for important officials or priests. There was usually an altar dedicated to Dionysus somewhere in the odeon. The "logeion" was a small raised platform where the performers acted (the original dramas had at most three or four actors; the size of the stage would increase as later plays required bigger casts).

History

The Tambo, the Incan replacement for the Post Office, requires the Engineering technology instead of the Paper technology, is cheaper and increases trade route yield.

Tambos (Quechua for "inn") were Incan structures built for administrative and military purposes. They were found alongside the Incan road network. They typically carried supplies, and served as lodging for itinerant state personnel (such as chasquis, Incan messengers, and quipucamayocs, those who could read and create quipus, for example) and as depositories of quipu-based records. Swift communication was achieved through the tambo network, and messages reached their destinations effectively and efficiently.
Remains of tambos are scattered throughout modern-day Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Colombia. Spanish conquistador and chronicler Pedro Cieza de León made numerous references to the tambos in his "Crónicas de Perú". In the following passage, Cieza de León described the general uses for the tambos that he learned from native peoples:
And so there would be adequate supplies for their men, every four leagues there were lodgings and storehouses, and the representatives or stewards who lived in the capital of the provinces took great care to see that the natives kept these inns or lodgings (tambos) well supplied. And so certain of them would not give more than others, and all should make their contribution, they kept the accounts by a method of knots, which they call quipus, and in this way, after the troops had passed by, they could check and see that there had been no fraud.

History

The Trading Post, the Norse replacement for the Lighthouse, gives all ships built in this city the Navigation I promotion and allows you to hire one Merchant specialist.

Although they did seek to extend their empire through piracy and invasion, for much of the time the Vikings were merchants, with a trading network that extended from Greenland, Iceland, and Finland into the British Isles, Western Europe, and the Mediterranean. Viking merchants are known to have traded Russian slaves at Constantinople for silks and spices, and they brought furs and ivory from far-away Greenland to ports throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
The earliest Viking trading posts were quite primitive settlements, consisting of simple dwellings and warehouses constructed of whatever local material was readily available. Over time many of the posts flourished, becoming important cities in their own rights. For example the Irish capitol of Dublin began its existence as a Viking trading post; and after being captured by the Vikings, the English city of York became a thriving trading center, second in importance only to London.

History

The Alchemist, the Arabian replacement for the Pharmacy, increases the city's science output.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the focus of alchemical development moved to the Arab Empire and the Islamic civilization. Much more is known about Islamic alchemy as it was better documented; indeed, most of the earlier writings that have come down through the years were preserved as Arabic translations.
The study of alchemy and chemistry often overlapped in the early Islamic world, but later there were disputes between the traditional alchemists and the practical chemists who discredited alchemy. Muslim chemists and alchemists were the first to employ the experimental scientific method (as practised in modern chemistry), while Muslim alchemists also developed theories on the transmutation of metals, the philosopher's stone and the Takwin (artificial creation of life in the laboratory), like in later medieval European alchemy, though these alchemical theories were rejected by practical Muslim chemists from the 9th century onwards.
Early Islamic chemists such as Jabir ibn Hayyan, Al-Kindi and Al-Razi contributed key chemical discoveries, including: distillation apparatus (such as the alembic, still, and retort), the hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric and acetic acids, soda and potash, purified distilled alcohol, aqua regia, perfumery and many more chemical substances and apparatus.

History

The Citadel, the Spanish replacement for the Castle, is half the production cost and lowers city maintenance.

Throughout history, men have built fortified structures to protect themselves from external enemies. These structures have taken many forms over the years, from simple ditches and walls to medieval castles to huge and complex "star" fortresses designed to protect against muskets and cannon. Citadels are large castle-like structures built in or adjacent to cities. They are designed to defend the city against external attack, and (often) to protect the cities rulers against internal revolt.
During the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, Spain was a mighty colonial power with cities scattered throughout the Caribbean and Central and South America, providing Spain with (among other things) enormous quantities of silver and gold. These cities were under constant threat of attack, both from European fleets and armies as well as from native uprisings. To protect its possessions, the Spanish built a series of mighty citadels in its most important cities. When properly garrisoned and supplied, these were extremely difficult to capture. Remnants of these Spanish citadels can still be seen throughout the New World - El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a fine example of Spanish defensive works.

Gompas are Buddhist temples (typically forming monasteries or nunneries, Sanskrit name vihara), located in Tibet, Ladakh (India), Nepal, and Bhutan. Their design and interior details vary from region to region, however, all follow a general layout of a central prayer hall containing a Buddha statue, benches for the monks or nuns to engage in prayer or meditation and attached living accomodation. The gompa may also be accompanied by any number of stupas.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (colloquially known as the Mounties, and internally as 'the Force') is both a federal and a national police force of Canada, and one of the most recognized of its kind in the world. It is unique in the world as a national, federal, provincial, and municipal policing body. The RCMP provides policing services to all of Canada at a federal level, and also on a contract basis to the three territories, eight of Canada's provinces (the RCMP does not provide provincial or municipal policing in either Ontario or Quebec), more than 190 municipalities, 184 aboriginal communities, and three international airports.

History

The Salon, the French replacement for the Coffee House, provides a cultural bonus, increases the birthrate of Great People and allows you to hire one Statesman specialist.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the French nobility used to gather the local "intelligentsia" to discuss the literary or artistic works of the day. The word "salon" refers to the reception room where these parties were held. The salons were almost always organized by the most beautiful, intelligent and rich women in the French nobility. During the seventeenth centuries the two most important literary salons were run by Madame de Rambouillet and her rival, Madeleine de Scudery. Virtually every important French author, poet, artist and scientist attended one or the other of these gatherings, making them the very centers of French intellectual thought.

History

The Seowon, the Korean replacement for the University, requires the Paper technology and instead of the Academia technology.

Throughout its history, Korea has always placed great emphasis on education. The first system of formal education was created during the "Three Kingdoms" period (57 BC - 668 AD). This system was loosely based upon the education system used in Korea's northern neighbor, China. The National Confucian Academy (or "seowon"), the first state-run institution of higher learning was founded in 372 AD, and some three hundred years later another university - the National Confucian College - was founded in 660 AD. Early Korean universities emphasized the study of Chinese classics. Confucianism was an important topic of study, and it remained so even after the Koryo Dyansty adopted Buddhism as the state religion.
In modern Korea (at least in the South) education continues to be held in high importance. There are over 300 institutes of higher education - including junior vocational colleges and colleges and universities and graduate schools - in South Korea, with enrollment in excess of two million students.

History

The Feitoria, the Portuguese replacement for the Customs House, improves the commerce output of water plots.

The Feitoria is a Portuguese trading post. During the colonial era Feitorias were essential to the Portuguese in expanding their trade network between Europe, the Far East, and eventually the Americas. They afforded ships with limited range a safe port of call to refill depleted supplies and give their crews much needed rest.

History

The Hacienda, the Colombian replacement for the Estate, increases the improved tile yield of Bananas and Coffee.

Hacienda is a Spanish word for an estate. Some haciendas were plantations, mines or factories. Many haciendas combined these productive activities. The hacienda aimed for self-sufficiency in everything but luxuries meant for display, which were destined for the handful of people in the circle of the patrón, also known as the hacendado.
Haciendas originated in land grants, mostly made to conquistadors. It is in Mexico that the hacienda system can be considered to have its origin in 1529, when the Spanish crown granted to Hernán Cortés the title of Marquess of the Valley of Oaxaca, which entailed a tract of land that included all of the present state of Morelos. Significantly, Cortés was also granted an encomienda, which included all the Native Americans then living on the land, and with power of life and death every person on his domains.

History

The Rathaus, the German replacement for the Civic Square, lowers city maintenance.

In German towns and cities the Rathaus was a central location used primarily for town council meetings and other official business. It was also used as a large meeting space for interest groups as well as for other activities, depending on the town's policies.
Germany has several famous rathauses, including the Rathaus Schöneberg. The Rathaus Schöneberg was built in the Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg between 1911 and 1914 before Schöneberg was absorbed by Berlin. After World War II, the Rathaus Schöneberg served as the temporary seat of government for West Berlin. Upon the destruction of the Berlin wall in 1989 the Rathaus reverted once again to its original function as City Hall of Schöneberg.

History

The Sejmik, the Polish replacement for the Civic Square, provides a small cash and happiness bonus.

A sejmik was a name of various local parliaments throughout the history of Poland. The first sejmiks were regional assemblies in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and earlier in the Kingdom of Poland. Sejmiks existed until the end of the Commonwealth in 1795 following the partitions of the Commonwealth. In a limited form, some sejmiks existed in partitioned Poland, and later, in the Second Polish Republic. In modern Poland, since 1999, the term has been revived as a voivodeship sejmik (sejmik województwa), referring to the elected council of each of the 16 voivodeships.

History

The Assembly Plant, the German replacement for the Factory, grants experience points to armored units built in its city, gives one free Engineer specialist, allows you to hire one more Engineer specialist and is produced 50% faster with access to Coal.

An assembly plant is a building or complex of buildings where workers build goods from their component parts, which are created on-the-spot or in factories elsewhere. In many cases the goods are assembled using an "assembly line" style of production in which individual parts are added to the product by a number of workers, each of whom performs his or her actions in sequence as the product moves down the production line. The plant also may include a warehouse to store parts as well as the finished products.
Although a relative latecomer to the Industrial Revolution and manufacturing in general, by the early twentieth century the German plants were among the most efficient in the world. During the First and Second World Wars German plants built thousands of tanks, planes, and other war materiel under horrendous conditions and in the face of concentrated Allied bombing attacks. Into the twenty-first century the German manufactories remain among the world's best.

History

The Cold Storage Plant, the Argentine replacement for the Supermarket, increases the improved tile yield of Cows, Deer, and Pigs.

An installation intended for the cooling, freezing, and cold storage of perishable food products and other perishables. It operates as an independent enterprise, comprises a cold-storage warehouse with truck and railroad platforms, compressor and condenser rooms for a refrigerating system, a cooling tower, reservoirs and a pumping station for a circulating water supply, administration and residential buildings, and other buildings and installations.
Port cold-storage facilities are used for the short-term storage of freight when freight is transferred from one type of transport to another, for example, from water to railroad transport, and are usually built in river ports or seaports. Central cold-storage facilities are intended for the long-term storage of products drawn from processing-and-procurement cold-storage facilities for the purpose of creating reserves. Commercial cold-storage facilities, such as refrigerated cabinets and sectional coolers, are used for the short-term storage of products at trading depots and in, for example, stores, dining rooms, and restaurants. In addition to general-purpose cold-storage facilities, which are intended for the storage of a wide variety of products, specialized cold-storage facilities are built for the storage of such products as fruits, vegetables, eggs, and salted fish.

History

The Mall, the American replacement for the Department Store, greatly increases the wealth output of the city when it has access to power and increases the city's happiness with access to Hit Football Events, Hit Singles, and Hit Movies.

During the 20th Century, the advent of the automobile has created an urban and suburban landscape in which people live in one area but can shop, play and work elsewhere - often miles away from their homes. Nowhere is this more true than in the United States of America, whose citizens are noted for an almost fanatical devotion to their cars. This has had important social, environmental and economic affects upon life in America, leading to (among other things) the creation of that most American of institution - the shopping mall.
American shopping malls are surrounded by acres and acres of parking lots, and they may contain dozens (if not hundreds) of stores selling everything from clothing to jewelry to electronics to books to computers to videos. In some ways American shopping malls are akin in spirit to the old Arabian markets (although Americans don't particularly enjoy haggling and prices are generally fixed).
The earliest automobile-centered shopping center was the "Market Square," opened in Chicago, Illinois, in 1916. Constructed in Minnesota in 1992, the "Mall of America" is the largest mall in the world. It contains over 500 shops, 80 restaurants, a theme park, hotel, and movie theatres. It is housed in a building large enough to hold over 30 Boeing 747 airplanes.
